Traditionally, Chinese money coins were cast in copper, brass or iron. While the images are not quite good enough to be absolutely certain, the coin appears to be "struck" as opposed to "cast". Cast silver coins were periodically produced but are considerably rarer. Chinese coins were cast not stamped on blanks like today and even 2000 years ago they were very well made. In the mid 1800s, the coins were made from three parts copper and 2 parts lead. I'm researching my first Chinese coine and believe I've found out that one side indicates Hsien-Feng T'ung-Pao and the other indicates Department of Public Works Mint and Coin.
